Bad Truck Drivers Caught on Video

Truck drivers didn’t get much love this holiday season, especially those driving for the major parcel carriers. These carriers were burdened by a combination of bad weather and an unanticipated surge in online orders before Christmas—causing many missed holiday service windows. You can bet that holiday shopping fatigue hit the carriers as much if not more than the shippers and the shoppers.

Speaking of fatigue, its effects on drivers have been addressed in the Hours of Service Legislation that was passed in July of 2013. There are plenty of arguments for and against the HOS rule regulating how many hours a trucker can be behind the wheel . In fact some are trying to change the legislation’s more debatable provisions, such as the alterations made to the 34-hour restart rule. The original rule allowed drivers to “reset” their workweek after 34 consecutive hours off duty. The new rules allows drivers to reset their workweek only once every seven days, with the rest period including two spans from 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. The American Trucking Associations stated that the 34-hour restart changes will ultimately have a net annual cost of up to $376 million as opposed to the $133 million net benefit cited by the FMCSA prior to the rules taking effect.

Wherever you come down on the HOS rules, it’s hard to argue that there aren’t some drivers out there that either need a rest, a drug test or at least some extra training.
