Alexandria, Va. and Rockville, Md. -- Data Interchange Standards Association (DISA) and Washington Publishing Company (WPC) announced the release of new machine-readable files to help health care payers and providers write the electronic transactions required by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA).

These automated files, called table data, reflect the latest addenda to the implementation guides based on the officially mandated versions of the ASC X12 electronic data interchange (EDI) standards, issued in October 2002. This latest version of the implementation guides, known as X12N version 004010, is used in conjunction with the original release dated May 2000. Health care payers and providers need to begin using these electronic transactions by October 16, 2003, as stipulated by the Administrative Simplification portion of HIPAA.

About the HIPAA Addenda Table Data

Washington Publishing Company recently completed the new implementation guides that combine the original May 2000 X12N version 004010 implementation guides with the revisions from the October 2002 Addenda. These WPC Combined Implementation Guides are the basis for the HIPAA Addenda table data. WPC offers a detailed description of these implementation guides at http://www.wpc-edi.com/hipaa/hipaacombguides.asp.

WPC prepares Section 3 of each X12N implementation guide from a central database. The HIPAA Addenda table data consist of a set of comma-delimited files and one structured file† free-form text† all derived from the central database that produces the implementation guides. Several tables are subsets of the X12 table data distributed by DISA, ASC X12's secretariat. DISA markets the HIPAA Addenda table data to support the ASC X12 standards.

WPC offers a detailed description of the HIPAA Addenda table data at http://www.wpc-edi.com/ReadMeTableData.html.
