How to Help with Hurricane Relief Efforts

Oct. 9, 2024
ALAN is again providing logistics relief and aid to hurricane victims, drawing upon the resources of the logistics industry.

With hurricane season wreaking havoc twice within a month in the Southeast, the American Logistics Aid Network (ALAN) is once again mobilizing for Hurricane Milton.

“In an ideal world we’d have plenty of time to focus all of our efforts on Hurricane Helene clean-up and recovery, especially because the needs are so extensive,” said Kathy Fulton, ALAN’s Executive Director, in a statement. “But in the real world, hurricanes don’t always wait for their turn. As a result, ALAN is consolidating its resources for preparedness and response efforts, and calling upon its network to help.”

ALAN has expanded its Disaster Micro-Site with a Situation Report that includes specifics about Milton’s path and impacts as well as links to transportation waivers and state business/industry resources.

“The bad news is, we’ve had to use this site several times already, because there have been so many hurricanes this year,” said Fulton. “The good news is it’s allowed us to do a better job of providing the industry with critical hurricane-related information—and helped us connect humanitarian organizations with the logistics help they need more quickly.”

ALAN is encouraging those who want to help with Hurricane Milton relief efforts, as well as ongoing efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, to visit the “Active Logistics Needs” portion of its Disaster Micro-Site often in the weeks ahead, bearing in mind that the vast majority of its requests tend to arrive after a storm has made landfall and initial assessments have been made. Those who wish to help should also consider fulfilling some of the many hurricane-related logistics needs that are already showcased there. Organizations that would prefer to support ALAN’s relief efforts by making a financial donation instead can do so here.

“We know it can be frustrating for organizations that want to do something tangible as soon as possible,” Fulton said. “But we hope they will still be willing to provide their logistics help when the need arises, whether it’s in a few days, a few months—or even beyond that.”

Founded in 2005 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, ALAN is a philanthropic, industry-wide organization that provides free logistics assistance to disaster relief organizations before, during and after catastrophic events.  It does this by bringing the expertise and resources of the logistics industry together with organizations so that help can arrive sooner, and each relief dollar can be maximized.
