Three cargo ships completed a run through Egypt's New Suez Canal on June 25, as reported by the Arabian Supply Chain.
The new $8 billion waterway, which is expected to open next month, began construction almost a year ago alongside the existing 145-year-old Suez Canal.
The new canal will double the capacity of the canal.
One of the cargo ships that complete the test run was an American ship heading to Egypt's Port Said from Saudi Arabia. The second ship was a Danish ship sailing to the U.S. from Singapore. While the third was a Bahraini ship going to Italy from Saudi Arabia.
Construction of another canal near the East Port Said port on the Mediterranean Sea will begin as soon as the New Suez Canal had been inaugurated according to Mohab Mameesh, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority which has managed the project.
The East Port Said canal is expected to cost around $60 million and will be 6 miles long, 18.5m deep, and 250m wide, with an expected completion time of 7 months.
All of these expansion will be good for Egypt’s economy since the Canal's current revenue of $5 billion per year will grow to $15 billion by 2023.
