CG Railway will relocate from the Port of Mobile to the Elaine Street Wharf at the Port of New Orleans, according to the Louisiana port authority. This fact and the conversion of the wharf into a dock for a rail ferry could boost vessel calls 86% to 95% per year.
The port already hosts six trunk line railroads, which port authorities claim is unique among U.S. ports. The state of Louisiana will invest a reported $15 million in infrastructure improvements at the port to accommodate CG Railway’s cargo activities.
CG Railway currently transports 10,500 rail cars per year between Mobile, Ala. and Coatzacoalcos, Mexico via a water ferry service. The move to New Orleans should allow that capacity to expand to 25,000 railcars per year in 2005.
