The Port of Tacoma announced the official opening of the Olympic Container Terminal Monday October 17th. The terminal will be the home of Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.
The Olympic Terminal is the third container terminal opening at Tacoma in 2005. It was preceded by the Pierce County Terminal, serving Evergreen Marine, Hatsu Marine and Lloyd Triestino, and the Husky Terminal, which is home to K-Line.
In separate news, The New World Alliance (TNWA) announced its agreement with the Grand Alliance to cooperate on key trades starting in 2006.
Just one month before the announcement, TNWA members APL, Hyundai Merchant Marine and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines issued a memorandum of understanding extending the terms of the current alliance among the three containership operators through the end of 2012. TNWA members stated at that time the agreement would allow them to provide more comprehensive network coverage for shippers.
The current announcement, which links TNWA members with Hapag-Lloyd Container Line, MISC Berhad, Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), will “significantly broaden the respective Alliances’ capabilities, network coverage and schedule frequency,” said the joint release. TNWA members will initially exchange slots in the Asia-Europe and Asia-Mediterranean trades with Grand Alliance members and introduce a new jointly operated loop on the Asia East Coat of North America trade via Panama.
