On May 15, Toronto-based Livingston International Inc. (www.livingstonintl.com) became the first customs broker to pass the U.S.-Canadian border using the Free and Secure (FAST) electronic release system.

Part of the U.S. National Customs Automation Prototype (NCAP) program, FAST is available only to those registered with Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism (C-TPAT).

Approaching the border at Detroit, the truck’s on-board transponder identified itself and its cargo to U.S. Customs, which immediately provided release approval.
