Under the agreement the two ports will share technology to improve air and water quality and mitigate environmental impacts of port operations. The Shanghai-Los Angeles Green Port Program encompasses three specific areas: air quality initiatives, water quality initiatives, and technology sharing and educational outreach initiatives.

Under the plan, the ports agreed to encourage the purchase of low-emission commercial ship engines and investigate use of cleaner fuels for ships and terminal equipment.

The ports also agreed to control discharges from ship and marine terminals and participate in an annual forum to discuss shared environmental issues and propose solutions.
