Zebra Technologies Corp. (Vernon Hills, Ill.) has acquired an extensive portfolio of radio-frequency identification (RFID) patents, which the company believes are important for the implementation of cost-effective high-performance RFID technology. The portfolio was acquired from BTG plc. for total cash consideration of approximately $10 million.
"This portfolio of more than 200 U.S. and foreign patents and patent applications makes Zebra owner of one of the largest collections of RFID patents, including several of the earliest patents related to the technology," says Philip Gerskovich, Zebra's senior vice president for corporate development. "This acquisition is part of Zebra's investment in a broad range of products and technologies necessary to be successful in RFID. It also demonstrates our commitment to deploy capital to extend Zebra's global competitive position and enhance downstream revenue opportunities. Zebra is a founding member in the RFID consortium currently in formation for the efficient licensing of RFID intellectual property.
