NFPA Releases Lift Truck Fire Report

QUINCY, Mass—The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has released “Industrial Loaders and Forklift Fires,” an overview of fires involving industrial loaders and lift trucks.

NFPA estimates that, from 2001-2006, U.S. fire departments responded to 1,340 structure and vehicle fires involving loaders and lift trucks per year. The vehicles were directly involved in ignition, according to NFPA.

“These fires caused an estimated average of 22 civilian injuries and $36 million in direct property damage per year,” said the NFPA in the report abstract. “Ninety-one percent of the fires were coded as vehicle fires.”

The report analyzes types of fires by area of origin, item first ignited, type of occupancy and factor contributing to ignition. In addition, it offers specific descriptions of incidents.
