This will be a second “coming home” for Andel, who previously served as MHM’s editor-in-chief from 2000-2004. MHM’s previous chief editor, Bernie Knill hired Andel as senior editor in 1997. But Andel’s first stint with MHM was when it was MHE—Material Handling Engineering. Knill hired Andel in 1980 as the magazine’s assistant editor.
“Tom’s work ethic is remarkable, and his depth of knowledge of the material handling and logistics market is extensive,” observed John DiPaola, vice president and group publisher of Penton’s Manufacturing & Supply Chain Group. Andel is a twenty-year Penton alumnus, where he worked on several supply chain group titles, including Transportation & Distribution (predecessor to Logistics Today), Material Handling Engineering and MHM. He also served as the Editorial Director for Questex’s Paperboard Packaging and most recently as the chief editor of Reed’s Modern Materials Handling.
“I’m coming back to MHM at a key point for the professionals it serves,” said Andel. “The Baby Boomers who make up a good portion of its readership are either reinventing themselves or they’re making succession plans for their replacements. This new generation will have different professional motivations and it’ll be up to MHM to present material handling and logistics as critical enablers in this world’s supply chains.”
“Tom Andel is a consummate professional and his return to Material Handling Management is evidence of the Manufacturing & Supply Chain Group’s strong commitment to the material handling and logistics field,” said Steve Minter, content director for the Manufacturing & Supply Chain Group.
Andel succeeds Mary Aichlmayr, who is stepping down as chief editor of MHM to pursue other ventures. “Mary’s enthusiasm for the material handling field was well known throughout the industry, and we wish her only the best in her future pursuits,” said Dave Blanchard, editorial director and associate publisher of MHM and Logistics Today.
