Jim Hoffa, Teamsters general president, reported the vote was 107 to one in favor of the agreement. This is the first ever contract with workers at the former Overnite Transportation and caps what Hoffa described as a 50-year effort to win a Teamster contract.

The agreement reached on Sept. 30 covers 125 dockworkers and drivers who belong to Teamsters Local 135 in Indianapolis.

The next step, according to the IBT is to organize the remainder of the UPS Freight workers, roughly 15,000 dockworkers and drivers, and extend the provisions of the Indianapolis contract to those workers.

Earlier, UPS and the IBT reached a tentative, five-year contract covering parcel workers. Following ratification by union members, the contract would take effect on August 1, 2008 after the expiration of the current contract (slated to run through July 31, 2008).
