Lexmark Printing Solution Builds on RFID Capability

Through a combination of its monochrome laser printing devices and radio frequency dentification (RFID) ultra high frequency (UHF) technology, Lexmark International, Inc. is introducing enhancements to its RFID solution, providing an alternative to track and access assets and information with real-time visibility. Lexmark was the first printer manufacturer to develop and bring to market a device that combines RFID technology with laser printing, the company says.

"Lexmark's newest RFID solution is leading-edge technology that helps our customers in key vertical markets, such as manufacturing and healthcare, to reduce errors and streamline processes," said Marty Canning, Lexmark vice president and president of its Printing Solutions and Services Division. "In addition, customers can also use the device to print and manage their everyday business documents, eliminating the need for and costs associated with operating multiple, single-use devices."

The new Lexmark RFID UHF Option is designed as an add-on accessory for Lexmark's T654 monochrome laser printer. The option, offered at an estimated street price of $2,499, prints RFID label media at up to 20 pages per minute in RFID mode. RFID tags can be placed either horizontally or vertically on the print media, and it supports a broad range of media from 5 x 7 inches to 8.5 x 14 inches.

The RFID UHF solution has the radio and antenna built directly into the printer option, so customers who already own a Lexmark T654 printer can upgrade their T654 into an RFID-enabled device.
