Kansas City Breaks Ground for Its Intermodal BusinessCentre

This is Phase I of an 800-acre multi-use development on the southeast corner of the airfield at Kansas City International Airport. The site will include four buildings, one of the nation’s largest Foreign Trade Zones and easy access to four Interstate highways.

Trammell Crow Co is handling creation of building site infrastructure that includes roads and utilities. The four buildings will comprise 1.8 million sq ft of commercial space. Under partnership with the Kansas City Aviation Department, because of its centralized location the facilities are mentioned as offering “a prime location for airlines, manufacturers, shippers, freight forwarders, big box distribution companies, air cargo-related services, intermodal distribution and logistics and light manufacturing companies.” The work is scheduled to be completed by Summer 2009.

In looking forward to the project, Steven Bradford, Trammell Crow managing director, says, “KCI Intermodal BusinessCentre is putting itself in a position to take advantage of Kansas City’s growing presence as a Midwest distribution hub. Our goal with this master planned development is to facilitate a diverse cross section of companies and confirm Kansas City International Airport’s role as an economic engine for the states, counties and cities which it serves.”

Jim Didion, principal with Trammell Crow Company in Kansas City adds, “As soon as the initial infrastructure is in place, we plan to develop a 494,000 sq ft distribution center that will be our first step in reaching this goal. We believe there is growing demand for state-of-the-art distribution facilities in Kansas City and we want to be at the forefront of that trend.”
