Russia to Grow a Cargo Airport, Create a Freight Railway

With eyes on increasing freight business with the launch of transpolar freight flights in 2007, work has begun – with a ceremonial placing of the foundation stone – at the Siberian Krasnoyarsk-Yemelyanovo Airport for building a new 4,000 square meter cargo terminal.

In addition to the building will be a centralized fueling system as well as a business center to host airlines, logistics companies and storage operations. As claimed by AirBridge Cargo (the Volga-Dnepr Group subsidiary), the location offers the shortest air route between Europe, Asia and the Americas, as well as being part of a vast network for cargo delivery across Russia. In addition to AirBridge Cargo, interest in the new cargo facility has been shown by Kras Air, Swissport and Nippon Cargo Airlines.

The new railway would offer the same tariff rates as its competitors and would end cross-subsidiaries to other types of business. At the outset, the new freight company’s fleet would include 564,000 rail cars.
