Kansas City Opens a New Intermodal Center
The Center is the result of cooperative action by Kansas City Southern, CenterPoint Properties, Hunt Midwest Enterprises, Inc. and the Port Authority of Kansas City, MO. It is on the site of the former Richards Gebaur air base.
With direct connection to a number of interstate roadways, CenterPoint-KCS Intermodal Center Phase I has 11,340 ft of main line track. In addition to its access to two- and four-lane highways, the facility has extensive paved parking and gate security and to generous room for growth.
With Phase I complete, work is underway to demolish unusable buildings and a former crosswind runway. The leveling and grading of roadways and building sites for new construction of a 5 million sq ft transportation and logistics hub will follow this work.
Michael R. Haverty, KCS chairman and CEO, observes, “The CenterPoint-KCS Intermodal Center here in Kansas City is well-positioned on the growing North American trade corridor to serve the growing traffic volumes between Asia and North America and between the US and Mexico. With its multimodal access, future warehousing and storage capabilities and numerous amenities, this facility is certain to be a crown-jewel for the region, and will ensure that Kansas City continues the tradition of serving as a transportation and logistics hub for North America.”
CenterPoint Properties expects to be ready to develop new industrial buildings at the Center’s industrial park by the end of 2008 in response to market demand.
