Another Air Cargo Carrier Goes Out of Business

Dulles, VA-based Gemini Air Cargo has ceased all operations. The carrier had offered airport-to-airport capacity for cargo customers and filled some freight lift needs for other airlines, such as Lufthansa, FedEx, British Airways and others.

It had spent two separate stints in Bankruptcy court within the past two years. Unable to find a buyer it began liquidation proceedings. The shutdown is the largest among US air freight carriers since Kitty Hawk Air went out of business in 2007.

The airline fleet had consisted of heavy aircraft that was reported to include four MD-11F and seven DC 10-30F planes. The McDonnell Douglas aircraft will go back to their lessors as liquidation moves along.

Scheduled domestic destinations included Anchorage, Miami and New York. Internationally the airline flew to Amsterdam, Accra, Brussels, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Ostend, Riyadh, Shanghai and Lagos.
