DSC Logistics Becomes SmartWay Partner

Logistics and supply chain management company DSC Logistics announced it has been accepted into the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaboration between the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry designed to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas and air pollutant emissions, and improve energy security.

DSC received certification in two areas: as a logistics provider and as a carrier partner. DSC reports it received the highest available score as a logistics provider.

The Transport Partnership's goal is to reduce 33 to 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012 by improving the environmental performance of freight operations. Carbon dioxide is the most common greenhouse gas, and nitrogen oxide is an air pollutant that contributes to smog.

"The SmartWay program is one of the many ways our company is exercising our commitment to sustainability,” remarked David Kahlow, DSC's director of sustainability. “In 2008 we began working to become certified in the program. In addition, we implemented a number of high-efficiency lighting projects at our distribution centers throughout the United States. To take our commitment to the next level, this year we are launching a corporate-wide initiative that focuses on what DSC employees can do for our customers, our company and our world. DSC also has expanded our energy efficient building management practices and is working closely with our supply chain partners on inter- company initiatives that benefit the environment and our respective business plans."
