Con-way Freight Expands San Antonio Operations
Con-way Freight, a less-than-truckload (LTL) trucking company and subsidiary of Con-way Inc., has begun construction of a new, 105-door, 41,500 square foot freight service center in San Antonio, Tex. The new facility will serve as the local hub for daily freight pickup and delivery service, nightly re-ship operations connecting San Antonio with one-, two- and three-day service points in Con-way’s nationwide network, and as a gateway for goods moving to and from Mexico.
The new facility will replace an existing 48-door service center where Con-way has been for more than 20 years. When the new service center is completed, the company expects to expand its workforce, adding over time more than 50 new jobs in capacities such as driver sales representatives, operations support and customer service. Con-way Freight currently employs 104 at its existing San Antonio facility.
“The city commends Con-way Freight for choosing to expand its operations in San Antonio with a $10 million investment on the East Side that will create 56 new jobs,” says San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro.
Construction has begun on the 30-acre, 41,500 square-foot freight operations and office complex with estimated completion expected during the second half of 2011. The new center initially will open with 105 dock doors but is designed to expand to 160 doors. The company currently handles more than one million pounds of freight per day out of its existing facility. The new site will provide capacity to expand those volumes to well over 1.5 million pounds per day encompassing both daytime and night operations. The expanded location will also house a five-bay maintenance facility and will have its own fueling facility and diesel fuel storage on site.
Today, Con-way Freight operates a fleet of 45 commercial truck-tractors and 156 freight trailers in San Antonio. The company dispatches over 40 professional driver-sales representatives each day providing freight pickup and delivery services for more than 1,500 local San Antonio businesses. Nationwide, the company operates a fleet of 9,100 truck-tractors and 25,000 freight trailers.
