Corporate Support for Veterans and the Workforce

July 18, 2013
A new series of contributions and sponsorships demonstrates the strategic value of corporate citizenship.
  • Fisher House Foundation announced a sponsorship from DHL to support the Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship, a program that honors those who have fallen in battle and those who have become severely disabled through their active U.S. military service since September 11, 2001. DHL donated $300,000 to help fund the scholarship program for the 2013-2014 academic year. Donations from DHL and other corporate and private sponsors have made it possible for Fisher House Foundation to help 130 military children with college tuition in the program’s first three years.
  • During PMMI's  PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2013 (Sept. 23–25, Las Vegas Convention Center) Pro Mach will be a sponsor of PACK gives Back, a benefit reception and concert featuring Kenny Loggins, on Monday, Sept. 23. The $25 ticket price will benefit K9s for Warriors, a Florida-based charity that pairs service dogs with military veterans struggling with post-traumatic stress as a result of conflicts and wartime service following 9/11. The program includes three weeks’ training and bonding for dogs and veterans at the K9s for Warriors facility in Ponte Vedra, Fla., and over 90 percent of the dogs come through rescue groups.
  • The Georgia Foundation for Public Education (GFPE), a state-chartered not-for-profit organization that works with the Georgia Department of Education (GaDoE) to promote innovative educational programs, has partnered with Siemens Industry Sector in the U.S. to develop advanced educational courses for the Career Pathways program. This program trains Georgia students using a curriculum based on the employment needs of international companies with facilities in the state. GFPE worked with Siemens to develop a teaching curriculum for GaDoE’s Manufacturing Pathway based on training materials, manuals and other educational tools used at the company’s Drive Technologies manufacturing plant in Alpharetta, Ga. The associated training materials provided by Siemens are valued at more than $500,000. This pilot program has been rolled out in South Forsyth High School where it will be delivered by a teacher that was trained at Siemens. Eventually, the program will also include internships, work-based learning projects and opportunities for overseas cultural experiences for students in Germany.
