Hurricane Sandy’s impact on the eastern third of the U.S., combined with other weather systems, includes storm surge, wind, rain, and snow from the Great Lakes as far south as South Carolina. Governors of the following states have declared States of Emergency: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina. The Mayor of the District of Columbia (DC) declared a State of Emergency on October 26, 2012.
As of 1:00 pm EDT October 29, the U.S. Coast Guard reported closures for ports in New York; Long Island Sound; Delaware Bay, including Philadelphia; and ports along coastal waters in Virginia and Maryland, including the Chesapeake Bay entrance. However, the Ports of Baltimore, MD, and Hampton Roads, VA were open with restrictions. The Ports of Boston, MA and Providence, RI were also open with restrictions.
Power companies have crews of staff, contractors, and loaned staff from other states on standby to respond to outages following the storm.
Many state and federal offices are closed. Many low lying and coastal areas are under evacuation orders.
The American Logistics Aid Network is participating in Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOAD), Emergency Management, and Business Emergency Operations Centers (BEOC) conference calls and monitoring media outlets for information. They are compiling offers of support, which can be sent to [email protected] for review and processing. Offers should include product / service, quantity, location, and contact information.
